An Adoptive Family’s Unique Path to Permanency

Back in 2020, we shared the story of Amy and Josh, the first adoptive parents in Massachusetts to meet their future adopted child, Laura, over Zoom! At the time our first post was published, Amy and Josh’s relationship with Laura was slowly progressing, but they were still getting to know each other. Two years later, we have some very exciting updates about this family!

As Amy and Josh will tell you, that first video meeting with Laura was the definition of awkward! She avoided eye contact and covered her face with her hair. But slowly, as they continued to have regular (still awkward) video meetings, Laura began to open up. And eventually, with their relationship established and safety protocols in place, they could meet in person!

Each week, Amy and Josh brought Laura homemade cookies and games to play. They never missed a single meeting, which showed Laura that she could, at least tentatively, trust them. Six months later, with all her belongings packed up, Laura saw her new home for the first time. She never left. Amy and Josh will proudly tell you that in October of 2021, Laura legally adopted them as her parents.

Since then, Laura has made many new friends. She loves school and has advanced three grades in math and two in reading. She wants to be a lawyer or a judge when she grows up. Her new parents read her bedtime stories every night, and every night, Laura tells them “I heart you!”  There is so much laughter and love in this family’s life! In Amy and Josh words, “We have Bridges Homeward and [Family Services Program Director] Sarah to thank for that.”

Congratulations to Amy, Josh, and Laura! We are so happy to see this family find permanency together.
