Shane and Howard’s Adoption Story

Congratulations to Howard and Shane, who will be finalizing Shane’s adoption on National Adoption Day 2024! Howard started working with Bridges Homeward two years ago to adopt a child from foster care. Being in his 60s, Howard wasn’t interested in adopting a young child and felt that a teenage boy would be the best fit for his family. Howard was motivated to provide a safe, stable, and loving home for a youth in care.

In February 2023, Howard participated in a “reverse” matching event where he made a video about himself that was shared with teenagers looking for an adoptive family. Shane saw Howard’s video and was interested in being part of his family. Shane is a friendly, funny, and good-natured young man who came into care when he was 6 years old. For many years he has wanted an adoptive family. Howard learned more about Shane and decided to move forward. They first met in August 2023, and Shane moved into Howard’s that December, just one month shy of his 18th birthday. Shane bonded with Howard quickly and was easily accepted by Howard’s family, friends, and church community.

Howard and Shane love to keep busy and spend time together! They enjoy going to the movies, attending sports events, and visiting their second home on the Cape. Shane also loves spending time with their dog, Max. Shane enjoys attending church with Howard and has taken on many leadership positions within the community, including attending Church Counsel Meetings and supervising younger children as a volunteer Youth Leader.

Shane has had many accomplishments since moving into Howard’s home. He attended prom, graduated high school, got his learners permit, and recently started college! He received a prestigious scholarship from his church and was selected as a recipient of DCF’s Youth Excellence Award. Shane hopes to one day become a veterinary technician so he can work with and help animals like his dog, Max.

It hasn’t always been easy, but Howard has stuck by Shane’s side and unconditionally supported him through everything. Congratulations to this wonderful family!
