Young Parents Support Program Hosts Online Cooking Class for Parents

One of the most fun parts of our job working with parents in our Family Support & Stabilization program is talking with them about cooking and nutrition. We love helping families make a grocery budget and learn easy, healthy recipes for dinner. When possible, we even like to cook with parents!

Before the pandemic, this work was always done in-person. Sometimes we would go with parents to the supermarket and help them pick out ingredients; sometimes we hosted cooking lessons at our office in Cambridge. But this year, we’ve had to adapt our practices to keep families safe from illness while also making sure they still benefit from our full range of services. So recently, our Young Parents Support (YPS) program hosted a live online cooking class for parents in YPS!

Five families and one resident in our Independent Living program participated in the cooking class, which was hosted on Zoom. The class was led by registered dietician Sarah Andrus, a volunteer with our long-time partner Lovin’ Spoonfuls. Sarah guided the class as they all made veggie burgers, sweet potato fries and black bean brownies in their kitchens at home. The YPS had purchased the ingredients each participant would need and delivered the groceries to them beforehand, so everyone had what they needed to make a great meal!

We’re glad we can still collaborate with our parents and families in this difficult time. We plan to continue coming up with new creative ways to support our families!
