Executive Director Bob Gittens Discusses Group Homes on Comcast Newsmakers

Earlier this year, Executive Director Bob Gittens was interviewed by Jenny Johnson for Comcast Newsmakers in Massachusetts, a web series that dives deep into issues in our state! Bob spoke with Jenny about the experiences of the teens and young adults who are placed as residents in CFCS’s group homes. Teens and young adults in group homes often have complicated and difficult pasts, and they share just as many commonalities with each other as they have differences. Residents’ lives are often impacted by institutional racism, sexism, the achievement and pay gaps, and LGBTQ+ discrimination and other social problems. And they look to supports like us to help them navigate those problems successfully.

Young people are well aware of the disproportionality in the system. They’re aware of the racial issues in their own communities. So they’re looking to us as adults to help address those issues. If we can’t build that bond of trust, and help [young people] navigate those issues when they’re on their own, they’ll lost trust in us.
