CFCS Observes Juneteenth with a Celebration of Our Staff’s Cultures
On Thursday, June 17, staff from all of CFCS’s six programs PLUS residents from our group homes and members of our Board gathered together at our office in Cambridge to celebrate Juneteenth! The event, organized by Human Resources Coordinator Cassandra LeBrun and Family Support & Stabilization Assistant Program Director Thara Young, featured food from Haitian, Jamaican and African American cultures. The food was catered by local restaurants Flames (Jamaican) on Huntington Avenue, Sunrise Cuisine (Haitian) in Somerville and Neighborhood Kitchen (Multicultural Foods) in Medford. You can order from all of these restaurants online either through their website or through Grubhub. No one could stop talking about how delicious it all was!
Our Human Resources Director Kaesta Campbell-Smith also made very important contributions to the event: Kaesta baked an incredible Juneteenth cake for dessert, and made a giant batch of mac n’ cheese for everyone! Both were hits.
At CFCS, we are striving to make major internal changes to make our culture and practices more inclusive and equitable. This work includes major self-reflection as an agency and as individuals, and we are beginning to have some very tough, very necessary conversations. An important part of these changes on our part will be to uplift and center the voices and cultures of all our staff. We are very grateful for Cassandra and Thara for organizing this event and creating a space for everyone to celebrate with our Black staff! We plan to keep this new tradition for many years to come.
