Celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation wherein he urged Americans to provide individuals with developmental disabilities “the encouragement and opportunities that they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.” Since then, March has been celebrated as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

The family support specialists of CFCS’s Developmental Disabilities Program provide support and advocacy to over 300 individuals with unique needs. We help them set goals and work towards achieving those goals; we provide guidance for spending funds awarded to them by Massachusetts’s Department of Developmental Services; we offer social activities and community trainings to expand their skills; and we partner with them to help them achieve fulfilling, life-long relationships with family, friends and their community. Most importantly, we help them realize that they have so much to offer, that life has so much to offer them and that they CAN seize opportunities and work towards their dreams!
